The Nokia N85 was said to be a successor of N95, and people are in fact having so much expectations from it since the N95 was bringing alot of company’s first-ever features, such as the dual-slide form factor, GPS, Wi-Fi, and the 5 megapixel camera.
But it turns out Nokia is taking a safe-way for this by only improve the Nokia N85 with a spring-loaded lens protector, add a dual-LED flash, switch the display to an OLED one, while the 5 megapixel camera, GPS, and Wi-fi are still the same.
Nokia N85 comes in the Nseries devices design attractively with minimal marks, square D-pad, and elegant glossy exterior on the fronts while the back is textured moccha brown. This finish really makes the Nokia N85 looks pretty exclusive and stylish, but as we all know, that this kind of finish are smudges and fingerprints magnet.
Surrounding the D-pad, there are the call and end keys, softkeys right below the display, the menu and the clear key.
Measures at 103×50x16mm and weigh at 128g (slightly thinner than the N82 as shown in the picture), the Nokia N85 gives a very solid and stiff feel on its body without any creak when the slide closed — although it does have a wobble when the keypad slid out.
Personally, i think it’s understandable, since the Nokia N85 is a slider.
Just like the N95 or N96, the dual-slide form factor provides the keypad when it’s slid-up and the 4-media keys when it’s slid-down.
The numeric keys are clicky and separated horizontally by a rubber line to show our fingers the key rows, but there’s no vertical separator so it’s tricky to feel the difference between the keys in a row, and i think it’s something we would get used to with the Nokia N85.
The keys backlight is pretty strong without any leak, and the it’s controlled by a light sensor.
The Nokia N85 is using an 2.6″ OLED color screen at 240×320 pixel resolution supports to display 16.7 million colors, which is truely a feast to the eyes. For your information, the difference between OLED and traditional LED display is the lightings of each pixel. In short, each pixel on the traditional LED screen is lighted up even when it display black colors; while on the OLED screen the black color pixels are not lighted up so the blacks on the OLED display looks darker and produces better vibrant color.
The drawback on the OLED screen is not good under direct sunlight, as you can see in the photo.
The 5 megapixel camera on the back is using Carl Zeiss lens — definetely not the first-one ever since it has been featured in most of Nseries devices — and protected with a spring-loaded cover. It also capable to record videos in VGA resolution at 30fps, using the same UI settings and options like the one found on the N95.
Other features that also packed in the Nokia N85 are including the miroSDHC cardslot A-GPS, Wi-Fi with UPnP support, 3G-HSDPA support, stereo Bluetooth, stereo speakers and 3.5mm audio jack.
Check out the video, guys. It’s a must see for all N85 lovers.
